One of the phenomena that has contributed to us finding ourselves in a globalised society has been migration. While it is true that this is a phenomenon that has occurred throughout history, it has taken on new connotations at the present time.
Several factors have driven this, such as wars, terrorism, economic and labour needs, or climate change. In turn, their effects have led governments in both countries of origin and destination to take measures to address this situation. For the former – the countries of origin – they observe that it is not easy to ensure peace in their territories or offer suitable jobs to a young population that is driven to emigrate.
On the part of host countries, this phenomenon leads – among other outcomes – to the arrival of people with a culture, religion, and traditions that are normally different from those traditional to that place. It is necessary to manage these factors correctly and fully promote integration while they reside in these new territories. This is a complex task that demands calm and constructive reflection on the phenomenon of migration and the protection of human rights – and, in particular, religious freedom.
In order to shed light on these issues, LICREGDI is bringing together specialists from different countries at this International Conference to contribute to the aforementioned reflection. In this way, the Laboratory aims to continue to effectively transfer knowledge to society, which will simultaneously be useful for strengthening peaceful coexistence.
